The first Southern Coach conversions were produced in 1979. Two years later, the company was asked to join the General Motors bailment pool system, where GM vehicles are shipped directly to Southern Coach for upfit, then delivered to GM dealers.

The company only allows select dealers in the states of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia to stock its products.
